From Military Working Dogs to Saving Lives: US Army Veteran Hector G. Rodriguez’s Next Chapter

After two decades of dedicated and impactful military service, Riverview, Florida native Hector G. Rodriguez is preparing to officially retire from the US Army in the summer of 2026. Bringing with him an extensive background in the Military Police where he served as a military working dog handler, trainer, and kennel master. Rodriguez is already paving the way for a highly successful post-military career in the K9 industry.

Throughout his Army career, Rodriguez developed a sterling reputation for rigorous discipline, tactical awareness, and adaptability under pressure. Now, as part of a proactive transition to civilian life, he is bringing those hard-earned skills to an organization dedicated to protecting vulnerable populations and aiding law enforcement.

Bridging the Gap Through the Career Skills Program

To facilitate this transition, Rodriguez is participating in the Department of Defense Career Skills Program (CSP). This initiative gives transitioning service members the unique opportunity to gain invaluable civilian work experience before they officially hang up their uniforms.
Currently, Rodriguez is serving as an intern and Scent Discriminate Trailing K9 Trainer at Scent Evidence K9 in Tallahassee, Florida. In this frontline role, he utilizes his vast military expertise to help train dogs and handlers that will be used in civilian search-and-rescue and law enforcement deployments.

A Day in the Life: Training the Next Generation of K9s

At Scent Evidence K9, Rodriguez’s role requires immense patience, sharp observation, and physical endurance. His day-to-day operations include several key elements:

  • Laying Complex Scent Trails: Designing and laying out challenging trails in various environmental conditions to develop the dogs’ human scent discrimination abilities.
  • Reading K9 Behavioral Changes: Working directly with the dogs to interpret their body language, reinforce positive trailing habits, and maintain their environmental focus.
  • Applying Operational Strategies: Integrating military-grade search tactics with civilian search-and-rescue techniques to maximize deployment effectiveness.

By combining his distinguished US Army background with the life-saving mission of Scent Evidence K9, Rodriguez is continuing his lifelong commitment to serving and protecting others. As he looks toward his official retirement, his work ensures that the communities he continues to serve are safer, one scent trail at a time.

Thank you for your service Hector Rodriguez. The Scent Evidence K9 Team wishes you well in your future endeavors.
